A KRAS drug nearly doubles pancreatic cancer survival

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. Average survival after diagnosis is measured in months, not years. A new class of drugs appears to be changing that.

Johnson & Johnson is paying one billion dollars for startup Firefly Bio, which develops so-called KRAS inhibitors: drugs that block a specific faulty protein in cancer cells. The acquisition follows striking results from a similar drug made by Revolution Medicines. The study showed that a KRAS-targeted drug nearly doubled survival in metastatic pancreatic cancer compared with standard treatment.

KRAS is a gene that encodes a protein involved in cell growth. Mutations in KRAS are the most common driving force behind several cancer types, including pancreatic, lung, and colorectal cancer. For decades, KRAS was considered ‘undruggable’ because the protein’s structure seemed to offer no suitable attachment point for drugs. In recent years, however, effective inhibitors have been developed.

Why this matters for longevity

Cancer is one of the leading causes of premature death and loss of healthy life years. Pancreatic cancer primarily affects people over sixty and rarely produces early symptoms. Effective treatment shifts not just survival but also the quality of remaining years. In the longevity context, cancer treatment is a direct pillar: delaying or preventing cancer death means gaining healthy time.

More KRAS inhibitors in the pipeline

Interest in KRAS is broad. Multiple pharmaceutical companies are developing inhibitors targeting different KRAS mutations. The Johnson & Johnson acquisition signals that the field is maturing. It is not a guarantee of success, but it confirms that KRAS inhibitors are no longer seen by industry as a high-risk gamble.
