Does Ozempic help with weight loss and how does it work?
Semaglutide demonstrably helps with weight loss: an average of 15% of starting body weight after just over a year. It works by suppressing hunger through both the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, but nausea is a well-known side effect that should be taken seriously.
Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) produces an average weight loss of 15% of starting body weight in people with obesity after approximately 68 weeks. That is more than any previously approved weight-loss drug has ever achieved. At a lower dose, weight drops by an average of 5 kg after 12 weeks; at the higher dose of 2.4 mg per week, it is nearly 10% after 20 weeks. These figures are always compared against a placebo, in people who also received lifestyle support.
How does it work? The drug mimics a hormone that the intestines produce after eating. In the brain, it suppresses the regions that drive hunger. In the body, it slows gastric emptying, increases insulin release and suppresses the hormone glucagon. The result: you feel full more quickly and have less appetite. In practice, participants ate 24 to 39% fewer calories per day than the placebo group, depending on the dose and the duration of the study.
Striking is what happens after prolonged use. People continued to eat structurally less after 60 weeks, but the sensation of reduced hunger largely disappeared after about 20 weeks. At that point the drug therefore works through mechanisms other than purely the feeling of hunger, although exactly which ones remain unclear. Gastric emptying was also no longer significantly delayed by the end of the longer studies, which gives it a different profile than previously thought.
In addition to weight loss, improvements have been reported in blood lipids (lower triglycerides and less 'bad cholesterol') and reduced fat accumulation around the organs. Whether this is independent of the weight loss itself, or directly caused by it, has not yet been fully clarified.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints, particularly nausea. The studies describe the safety profile as 'consistent with what was already known', but do not provide a detailed list of serious side effects. An oral form of semaglutide (50 mg per day) shows comparable effects to the injection; that study was funded by the manufacturer, which is worth bearing in mind when interpreting the results.
This answer is based on multiple randomised studies and reviews. The effects on weight and calorie intake have been measured repeatedly in controlled studies with placebo groups, including one large study conducted over 68 weeks. The researchers rate the evidence for the core effect (weight loss) as strong. For side effects and cardiovascular effects the evidence is somewhat less extensive; the studies do not provide a complete list of serious side effects. The study on the oral form was funded by Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic.
What are the effects of microdosing with Ozempic?
Microdosing with Ozempic has not been studied, so nobody knows whether it works or is safe. If you are considering using semaglutide, discuss with your doctor which dose is appropriate for your situation.
What are effective ways to lose weight?
The combination of eating fewer calories and exercising for more than 250 minutes per week is the most proven effective approach; add behavioural support if sustaining it proves difficult, and discuss medications or surgery with your doctor if lifestyle changes alone are not producing sufficient results.
Does metformin help with weight loss?
Metformin helps with weight loss, but the effect is modest: expect a few kilograms, not a dramatic transformation. Lifestyle changes work better in the short term, but weight loss with metformin remains stable over the long term. Discuss it with your doctor if you want to know whether it suits your situation.
Does drinking water help with weight loss?
Drinking water probably helps with weight loss, especially when done before meals or when used to replace sugar-containing drinks. The effect is modest and works best as part of a broader diet.
Does berberine help with weight loss?
Berberine leads to modest weight loss in some studies, but a large well-designed study found no effect on visceral fat. It is not a powerful slimming agent, but may offer additional benefits for people with elevated cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
I am overweight -- what will losing weight do for me?
Losing weight delivers measurable health gains from as little as 5% weight loss: better blood sugar, lower blood pressure and less pressure on your knees. Combine diet with strength training to preserve muscle mass and reduce the risk of weight regain.
