What are the proven health benefits of snail mucus for the skin?

Preliminary evidence

Snail mucus shows potential in small and preliminary studies for hydration, anti-ageing and wound healing, but large clinical confirmation is still lacking. If you have sensitive skin, bear in mind the allergy risk that has not yet been fully investigated.

Snail mucus contains a mix of substances that sound interesting on paper: allantoin (known as a skin-softening agent), glycolic acid (a mild exfoliating acid), proteins, sugar chains and polyphenols. Reviews describe that this combination can improve skin hydration, flexibility and smoothness. However, these are reviews that largely summarise small-scale and laboratory studies, not large controlled trials in humans.

Snail mucus is also being investigated for acne, scars, hyperpigmentation and anti-ageing. Large clinical studies are still lacking, however. What does exist are smaller and preliminary findings that suggest the ingredient is active enough to produce effects, but which are not yet robust enough to say which complaint it helps most or which dosage works.

More promising are the indications for wound healing and protection against sun damage. Reviews identify this as potential, but the same caveat applies here: the precise mechanism of action in humans has not yet been well mapped. You therefore cannot claim that snail mucus has been clinically proven to accelerate wound healing.

One point that is explicitly flagged in the literature is safety. Research into allergic reactions to snail mucus has so far been insufficient. This means that safety for all skin types has not yet been established. If you have sensitive skin or known allergies, it is wise to take this into account before using such a product.

The evidence
3 studies

All three sources are reviews (not randomised trials or meta-analyses). The claims are largely based on small-scale or preclinical studies summarised within these reviews.
