Psilocybin shields nerves during chemotherapy
A common but poorly addressed side effect of chemotherapy is lasting nerve damage in the hands and feet. Researchers tested psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms, as a protective agent, with surprisingly positive results in mice.
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a frequent and sometimes disabling consequence of cancer treatment. Patients experience tingling, pain or numbness in their hands and feet, sometimes for years after finishing treatment. Effective preventive strategies are scarce.
A study published in Science shows that psilocybin can prevent this nerve damage in mice through a specific mechanism. The researchers found that psilocybin preserves the transport of mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside cells, to nerve endings. Chemotherapy normally disrupts this transport, leaving nerve fibres starved of energy and causing them to deteriorate. Psilocybin kept that transport process intact.
Mitochondria as the key
It is notable that the protective effect operates through mitochondrial transport rather than through psilocybin’s known psychedelic action on serotonin receptors. This raises the question of whether the psychedelic properties of the compound are necessary for this effect at all, or whether chemically related substances without those properties could achieve the same result.
What this does not yet prove
The study was conducted in mice, not in people. It remains unknown whether psilocybin has the same protective effect in cancer patients, or whether it can be safely combined with standard chemotherapy regimens. Clinical trials would need to answer those questions.
From a longevity perspective, the mitochondrial mechanism is of broader interest: mitochondrial transport plays a wider role in cellular health and aging. Whether this mechanism is relevant beyond the context of neuropathy requires further investigation.
