Tumors weaken immune cells using antioxidants
Cancer cells protect themselves by disarming the immune cells sent to destroy them. They do it using an unexpected tool: antioxidants, substances normally considered beneficial.
The immune system deploys T cells to attack tumours. That attack requires T cells to generate reactive oxygen species, a type of free radical, as part of their killing mechanism. But cancer cells interfere: they release antioxidants that neutralise these reactive molecules, making T cells less effective exactly where they need to work hardest.
The researchers, publishing in Science, showed that tumours actively produce and secrete antioxidants. These substances strip reactive oxygen species from nearby T cells, suppressing the immune response in the immediate vicinity of the tumour.
A newly identified suppression mechanism
Immune suppression by tumours is not a new concept, but this specific mechanism involving antioxidants was not previously known. It reveals a paradox: substances we commonly regard as protective can, in the context of cancer, contribute to a weakened immune defence. This has implications for how antioxidant supplements and cancer therapies are combined.
What this means for treatment
The finding suggests that blocking this antioxidant mechanism could potentially make immunotherapy more effective. Whether this holds true in humans has not yet been demonstrated. The study was conducted in cell cultures and animal models. Clinical validation is the next step.
From a longevity perspective, this touches on a broader theme: the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants in cellular and immune function is more complex than popular health messaging suggests. The context in which antioxidants act strongly determines whether their effect is beneficial or harmful.
