A blood test detects Alzheimer’s seeds early

Alzheimer’s doesn’t start with forgetting. It starts with a microscopic cluster of misfolded protein in your blood, years before any symptoms appear. Researchers have now found a way to detect that cluster using a technique borrowed from prion disease research.

Alzheimer’s disease is marked by the accumulation of a misfolded protein called amyloid-beta. These aggregates form slowly in the brain, sometimes more than a decade before the first symptoms. A reliable early blood test could change everything: the sooner you intervene, the better the odds.

The researchers used a method called protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA). The idea is straightforward: tiny amounts of misfolded protein in the blood are repeatedly warmed and exposed to sound waves, causing the abnormal proteins to multiply until they reach a detectable level. Even trace quantities become measurable.

High accuracy across a large group

The study enrolled 549 participants. The test distinguished Alzheimer’s patients from cognitively healthy individuals with an accuracy of 93 percent (AUC = 0.93). It also reliably identified people with mild cognitive impairment linked to Alzheimer’s. The amount of amyloid seeding activity in the blood correlated strongly with cognitive test scores, suggesting the test tracks disease severity as well as presence.

What this does not yet mean

The researchers urge caution. Participants were people already suspected of having dementia. It remains unclear whether the test performs equally well in fully asymptomatic individuals, or whether early detection translates into better treatment outcomes. Routine clinical use is not yet on the table.

From a longevity perspective, the direction is nonetheless significant. If early amyloid accumulation can be reliably tracked in blood, it opens the door to preventive strategies that are currently unthinkable. The question shifts from how to treat Alzheimer’s to when, exactly, to start.
