A drug that clears out aged skin cells passes its first human safety test
A company focused on eliminating "zombie cells" -- cells that stop dividing but refuse to die and instead wreak havoc in the body -- has shown for the first time that its approach works in people without serious side effects.
Rubedo Life Sciences tested its drug RLS-1496 in an early clinical trial involving patients with psoriasis, eczema, and sun-damaged skin. The results, which the company recently announced, come from a double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 1 study -- the most rigorous design available for early clinical research. Participants received escalating doses of the drug, and researchers tracked both safety and the first signs of efficacy.
Zombie cells -- known in science as senescent cells -- accumulate in tissues as we age. They release signaling molecules into their surroundings that drive inflammation and damage healthy cells. This process is considered one of the key mechanisms behind aging and age-related disease. Drugs designed to selectively clear these cells are called senolytics. RLS-1496 is one such drug, developed specifically for the skin.
Why the skin makes sense as a starting point
Choosing skin conditions as the first testing ground is a strategically smart move. Skin is directly visible and easy to measure. What's more, psoriasis and eczema are chronic inflammatory diseases in which senescent cells are thought to play a role. If a senolytic produces a measurable effect there, it sends a strong signal that the underlying theory holds -- not just for skin, but potentially for other tissues as well.
Rubedo uses artificial intelligence to identify the molecular features that distinguish senescent cells from healthy ones. The goal is to develop drugs that are more precise than earlier senolytics, which sometimes caught healthy cells in the crossfire. RLS-1496 targets a specific protein that is present at elevated levels in aged skin cells.
What the results mean -- and what remains uncertain
The preliminary findings have been described as positive, but the company has not yet published detailed efficacy data in a peer-reviewed journal. That makes independent scrutiny impossible for now. Phase 1 studies are primarily designed to assess safety, not to prove that a drug actually works. The real test -- whether it outperforms a placebo in enough participants, over the long term -- only comes in later phases.
Even so, this is a milestone for the broader field of senolytics. Other drugs such as dasatinib and quercetin are already being tested in humans, but RLS-1496 is among the first developed specifically for the skin and brought to life through an AI-driven design process. Whether that design approach actually delivers an advantage in practice remains an open question. The field has seen promising results before that failed to hold up in larger studies.
