A longevity drug that mimics exercise effects
Exercise is good for you. Everyone knows that. But what if a pill could replicate its biological effects? That is exactly what US company Cambrian is trying to develop.
Physical activity has dozens of measurable effects at the molecular level: it improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, stimulates mitochondrial production and slows some aging markers. Researchers have long been trying to identify which signaling pathways are responsible, with one goal in mind: can those pathways be activated without exercise?
Cambrian’s experimental approach
Cambrian, a company focused on longevity pharmacology, has developed an experimental compound that according to STAT News mimics the biological effects of exercise. Details on the precise mechanism of action remain limited, which warrants caution when evaluating the claims. The compound is at an early stage of development.
Exercise mimetics (compounds that replicate exercise effects) are not a new concept. AICAR and other AMPK activators (enzymes that regulate energy balance in cells) have been studied for years. What Cambrian claims to be doing differently is targeting multiple pathways simultaneously in a more coordinated way, but clinical data have not yet been made public.
What we still don’t know
The fundamental challenge with exercise mimetics is that physical activity does not activate a single pathway. It activates dozens simultaneously, in a coordinated manner that depends on intensity, duration and type of movement. A pill that fully reproduces that does not yet exist. Whether Cambrian’s approach comes closer to that goal than earlier attempts cannot be assessed from the information currently available.
For the broader longevity field, the promise of exercise mimetics is nonetheless relevant. People who cannot exercise due to illness, age or physical limitation could benefit from a compound that partially reproduces the most protective effects of movement. Clinical trials will have to determine whether that is achievable.
