AI could bring specialist dementia care to more people

There are not enough specialists to properly support everyone living with dementia. A group of researchers argues that so-called agentic AI could help close that gap, though the path from vision to practice remains long.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia require ongoing monitoring, complex diagnosis, and individualized guidance. Demand for specialists is growing faster than supply. In a perspective article in Nature Aging, the researchers describe how agentic AI could play a role: systems that reason autonomously, integrate multiple data sources, and continuously update their knowledge.

Agentic AI differs from conventional AI tools in that the system independently plans and executes multiple steps. Imagine a system that simultaneously analyzes a patient’s medical record, cognitive test results, imaging data, and lifestyle information, then formulates a recommendation for the clinician. The researchers suggest that such a system, combined with human oversight, could make specialist-level dementia care more widely accessible.

Collaboration as a requirement

The authors stress that this is not a matter of AI replacing clinicians, but of AI working alongside them. Their proposed model relies on continuous collaboration between physicians and a continuously learning system that updates itself based on new scientific findings and individual patient outcomes.

That is also where one of the main challenges lies. A learning system requires large volumes of reliable data. In dementia care, those data are fragmented across hospitals, general practitioners, and nursing homes, and are not always standardized. Privacy regulations add further complexity to data sharing.

A vision, not yet evidence

It is important to note that this article presents a perspective, not a clinical trial. The authors sketch a possible future based on current technological trends. How well agentic AI systems will actually perform in dementia care, and in which patient populations, still needs to be demonstrated in controlled studies.

From a longevity perspective, the broader implication is relevant: if AI can make specialist care more scalable, early diagnosis and intervention for neurodegeneration could become structurally more accessible, potentially reducing the disease burden of an aging population.
