AI finds hidden GLP-1 side effects in Reddit

GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide are increasingly prescribed for weight loss and diabetes. Clinical trials are well suited to detecting common side effects. They are less effective at capturing side effects that are rare, delayed, or that patients do not spontaneously report to a doctor.

Researchers used an AI model to analyze Reddit posts from users writing about their experiences with GLP-1 drugs. The most striking findings were complaints about menstrual irregularities, chills, and hot flashes. None of these side effects feature prominently in the official product information for these drugs.

Social media as an early warning system

The idea that social media can supplement formal pharmacovigilance is not new. But the scale at which the researchers applied it is. 400,000 posts offer a different type of data than a randomized trial: less controlled, but closer to patients’ daily reality.

The methodological limitations are substantial. Reddit users are not a representative sample of the general population. Posts are unverified: someone writing about a side effect may not have actually experienced it, or the complaint may have another cause. Correlation is not causation.

Complement, not replacement

The researchers nonetheless see value in the method as a supplement to official side-effect monitoring. If social media consistently generates signals that are later confirmed in formal studies, early AI monitoring could shorten the time between a problem emerging and an official warning being issued.

For current GLP-1 users, this study changes nothing directly. The identified side effects are patient reports, not proven causal effects. Anyone experiencing complaints while using weight-loss medication should discuss them with a doctor.
