AI scientist speeds up the search for new drugs
Artificial intelligence that can reason independently like a scientist. Pharmaceutical companies offered tens of millions to use it. Now it has been spun out into a company aiming to transform drug development.
Edison Scientific, a spin-off from non-profit FutureHouse, has raised 70 million dollars in venture funding to deploy AI agents in new drug development. The researchers report that major pharmaceutical companies spontaneously approached them, offering 30 million dollars for access to the technology before the commercial product even existed.
What does an AI agent actually do?
An AI agent is more than a chatbot that answers questions. The system can reason independently, search scientific literature, formulate hypotheses, and plan experiments. In drug development, this means the hunt for new active compounds (candidate molecules that may suppress disease) could proceed faster than ever. The goal is to give every research team a digital colleague that analyses around the clock.
For longevity research this is significant. Much of the work in the field involves searching vast amounts of biological data for patterns linked to aging. AI agents that take over this work could substantially shorten the discovery timeline for potential interventions.
From non-profit to commercial product
FutureHouse was founded in 2023 with the aim of scaling scientific discovery by equipping every researcher with AI agents capable of independent reasoning. When big pharma came calling, the founders saw an opportunity for a commercial product. Edison Scientific is the result. The partnership with Population Health Partners, the team behind the obesity drug Metsera, suggests early applications may cluster around metabolic and age-related conditions.
Whether this approach actually delivers safe drugs faster remains to be seen. The technology is promising, but clinical validation of AI-discovered candidates is still in its early stages.
