Do you really need electrolyte supplements?

For shorter workouts you do not need electrolyte supplements; for endurance exercise lasting longer than 90 minutes, sports drinks containing sodium and carbohydrates can be beneficial, but drinking too much is a real risk.

For short workouts lasting less than 90 minutes, you do not need electrolyte supplements. Water is sufficient, and your normal diet provides more than enough sodium, potassium and magnesium to compensate for what is lost through sweat.

Only with exercise lasting longer than 90 minutes does the picture change. Sports drinks containing both carbohydrates and sodium can then help extend endurance. Sodium helps the body retain water more effectively; the carbohydrates provide fuel. The recommended amount is 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour, combined with 600 to 1200 ml of fluid per hour containing 0.5 to 0.7 grams of sodium per litre. These are guidelines for endurance athletes, not for the average recreational exerciser.

A pitfall that few people are aware of: drinking too much is dangerous. In endurance athletes who drink more than they sweat, blood sodium levels can drop to dangerously low levels, a condition that can also arise from drinking excessive amounts of water without salt. This risk therefore also applies to people who assume that drinking extra fluids is always safe.

Potassium supplements certainly do not work in every situation. A study involving athletes who were forced to be inactive for an extended period found that potassium supplementation did not improve the potassium balance but actually caused it to deteriorate more quickly. The body regulates its potassium balance through mechanisms that are difficult to influence with a supplement.

Extra salt can be useful in two specific situations: the first days of training in hot weather, or when caloric intake is low. Beyond that, the body has its own adaptive mechanisms that keep electrolyte balance well managed during normal physical activity. Vitamins and trace elements are barely lost through sweat; only sodium, potassium and magnesium can leak away in relevant amounts during intense sweating.
