Does learning a new language help keep your brain healthy?
Actively using two languages throughout your life is associated with a lower risk of dementia and a brain that continues to function well for longer, but learning a language as an adult does not yet provide comparable protection. If you want the benefits, it comes down to years of active use, not learning alone.
Speaking two languages throughout your life demonstrably keeps the brain more resilient. Bilingual people develop symptoms of dementia on average about four years later than monolingual people. That effect was found regardless of education, literacy or background, although not all studies confirm it. The brain continues to function better despite structural decline: brain scans show that the networks controlling attention and planning remain better organised.
The mechanism can be understood as a kind of 'brain savings account'. Someone who masters two languages must constantly direct their attention: which language do I speak now, which do I suppress? That demanding daily work strengthens the brain regions responsible for executive control. This allows the brain to continue functioning normally even when more damage has occurred. Bilingual people diagnosed with Alzheimer's sometimes have more brain shrinkage in memory regions than monolingual patients with the same level of symptoms, which shows that bilingualism does not stop the disease itself but rather masks the symptoms.
There is a downside: once decline sets in, it progresses faster in bilingual people than in monolingual people. The higher the threshold, the greater the fall once it is crossed. Bilingual people also have a smaller vocabulary in each language individually and slower word retrieval than monolingual people. That is a real disadvantage. In advanced dementia, bilingualism also does not protect against language problems in the second language.
The protection is strongly linked to how lifelong and actively you use two languages. People who learn a second language only later in life do not yet show comparable changes in the brain. The protective effect therefore does not appear to come from learning itself, but from years of intensive daily practice in two languages. There are early indications that speaking three languages offers slightly more protection than two, but this has barely been studied.
In short: learning a new language as an adult is a healthy mental challenge, but the robust protection enjoyed by lifelong bilinguals is probably not achievable through that alone. The benefit lies in actively and frequently using that second language, year after year.
