Does omega-3 protect your skin from sunburn?
Omega-3 offers some protection against the sunburn response, but the effect is limited and no proven protective dose is known. Keep using sunscreen and regard omega-3 as a possible complement, not an alternative.
Omega-3 fatty acids offer some protection against sunburn. Multiple studies show they can reduce the redness (erythema) caused by UV radiation. This works through anti-inflammatory action: omega-3 inhibits the production of inflammatory substances that skin cells release when damaged by the sun. The effect is limited, however, and absolutely does not replace sunscreen.
Whether omega-3 also prevents skin cancer is less clear. In animal and laboratory research, omega-3 fatty acids clearly suppressed UV-related cancer stimulation, whereas omega-6 fatty acids actually amplified it. But whether this is also clinically relevant in humans is not well understood: large human studies are still lacking. For melanoma prevention the evidence is even thinner; there are preliminary indications that omega-3 may play a role through antioxidant and immune-modulating effects, but researchers explicitly caution that some micronutrients can also have unfavourable effects at high doses.
Interestingly, omega-3 (specifically EPA) also works when applied externally. Applied as a cream to the skin, EPA reduced UV-related skin thickening and inhibited the breakdown of collagen in human studies. That makes it relevant for sun-related skin ageing, but this concerns topical products, not fish oil capsules.
A practical sticking point: nobody knows what dose of omega-3 measurably protects your skin. There is no scientific consensus on an effective supplementation dose for this purpose. Taking omega-3 for your skin is therefore not a prescription with a clear number attached to it.
