Does red orange extract (Red Orange Complex) help against skin ageing and pigmentation spots?
There is positive evidence from multiple small human studies that 100 mg of red orange extract per day reduces pigmentation spots and protects the skin against UV damage. All studies are small or partly funded by the manufacturer, so the outcomes should not yet be considered definitively proven.
Red orange extract (100 mg/day) already showed a striking effect on pigmentation spots in a smaller 15-day study: the melanin content in age spots fell from 27% to 7% in participants who were simultaneously exposed to UV light, and UV-induced skin redness also decreased measurably.
A larger randomised double-blind study in 110 participants over 56 days confirmed several improvements at the same time: better hydration and elasticity, fewer deep wrinkles, less pigment intensity in dark spots, and reduced transepidermal water loss. The same study showed that the skin could tolerate more UV before redness occurred, and that antioxidant capacity in the blood increased. Note: one of the authors worked for the manufacturer of the ingredient, which is relevant to the interpretation of the findings.
In a placebo-controlled study in 54 people with a light skin type, the extract was combined with other ingredients (including vitamins and a fern extract). After 8 weeks, UV tolerance was 24% higher and skin redness after UV exposure was nearly half as much. However, the supplement had no demonstrable effect on tanning. In addition, it is unclear how much of the effect genuinely came from the red orange extract, as the product contained multiple substances. The study was also funded by the manufacturer.
Cell studies shed light on how the extract may work: it inhibits harmful inflammatory responses and oxidative damage in skin cells after UV exposure. This is a plausible biological explanation, but cell studies do not count as evidence of efficacy in humans.
In summary, for oral intake of 100 mg per day there is evidence from multiple human studies suggesting that the extract can reduce both pigmentation spots and signs of skin ageing. The studies are, however, relatively small, short in duration, and partly funded or conducted by the manufacturer. Independent large-scale research is still lacking.
