The overarching picture is now consistent across multiple studies: higher exposure to air pollution is associated with poorer brain health in older adults. Which pollutant is the most harmful, which life stage is the most vulnerable, and which type of dementia carries the greatest risk are questions that remain unanswered. People who live in busy cities can already reduce their exposure by avoiding heavier traffic routes, ventilating their homes during quieter times of day, and seeking out green spaces nearby.
