Blood test reliably tells three dementias apart
A blood test that can distinguish three forms of dementia from one another: it sounds futuristic, but a large international study has taken a serious step in that direction. For people with memory problems, diagnosis could become faster and less burdensome.
Researchers analysed blood samples from thousands of patients across multiple centres worldwide. They searched for protein markers (proteomics) in the blood that are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia. These three diseases can look similar clinically, yet have different causes and require different treatments. Currently, telling them apart often requires costly brain imaging or an invasive lumbar puncture.
The study, published in Nature Aging, identified a set of blood proteins that appear to support both diagnosis and molecular staging, meaning the blood profile may indicate how far the disease has progressed. That matters because some treatments work better when started early.
More than a diagnostic shortcut
Dementia affects tens of millions of people worldwide. An early and accurate diagnosis enables better treatment decisions and gives patients and families more time to plan. Until now, blood-based diagnostics for dementia have focused mainly on Alzheimer’s. This study goes further by incorporating the other major dementia types into a single integrated blood panel.
Caution is still warranted. The biomarkers are promising, but the study is based on group-level data. How well the test performs at the individual level, and whether it is practical in routine hospital settings, remains to be shown. The researchers acknowledge that validation in larger and more diverse populations is still needed.
What this means for longevity research
From a longevity perspective, reliable biomarkers for neurodegeneration (the gradual breakdown of nerve cells) could allow disease to be detected earlier and the effectiveness of future treatments to be tracked more precisely. Blood is accessible, repeatable, and scalable. If such tests are clinically validated, they could play a key role in preventive neurology.
