Brain stimulation curbs procrastination for six months
Chronic procrastination is not a willpower problem. It is a measurable pattern in the brain. And that pattern turned out to be steerable using a non-invasive electrical pulse applied to the skull, with effects lasting six months.
Researchers conducted a double-blind, randomised, sham-controlled trial in adults with chronic procrastination. Seven sessions of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeted the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a brain region involved in planning, self-regulation, and the valuation of future rewards.
The study, published in eLife, used an intensive experience-sampling method to track procrastination in real life, not just in a laboratory task. This is an important methodological step: most neurostimulation studies only measure behaviour immediately after sessions, in controlled settings.
It is not about reduced aversion
Notably, the mechanism behind the effect was specific. Mediation analysis showed that stimulation did not work by making tasks feel less unpleasant. Improvement was explained by an increase in the perceived value of completing the task: participants anticipated the reward of finishing more strongly. Aversion to the task itself did not change significantly.
What this means for aging
Procrastination increases in some people with age, alongside changes in the prefrontal cortex, the brain region most vulnerable to aging-related decline. Whether neurostimulation could play a long-term role in preserving executive function is an open question. The researchers emphasise that the six-month follow-up result is robust, but that larger studies are needed. The effect was demonstrated in people with chronic procrastination, not in the general population.
