Chemo ages the liver faster than other organs
Platinum-based chemotherapy causes liver damage that goes beyond ordinary side effects. It accelerates the biological aging of liver tissue, a risk that has been underestimated until now.
Platinum compounds such as cisplatin and oxaliplatin have been cornerstones of cancer therapy for decades. They damage the DNA of cancer cells, slowing tumour growth. But they are not selective: they can also affect healthy cells. An analysis published in Science suggests that the liver ages faster after platinum chemotherapy than would be expected from chronological age alone.
The study explains the mechanism through DNA damage and cellular senescence: cells damaged by chemotherapy stop dividing but remain metabolically active, secreting inflammatory signals to surrounding cells. This so-called SASP signal (the mix of substances that senescent cells release) can further damage healthy liver tissue and drive aging in neighbouring cells.
What this means for cancer patients
The findings matter for people who undergo chemotherapy at a young or middle age. Liver aging may contribute over time to metabolic problems, reduced drug clearance, and a higher risk of liver disease. The authors describe this as a ‘hidden cost’ of an otherwise effective treatment.
Possible protection
The researchers flag strategies targeting post-chemotherapy senescence in the liver as a promising avenue for future research. Whether agents that clear senescent cells could reduce platinum-induced liver damage has not yet been demonstrated in humans. The study does provide a mechanistic framework for future protective treatments alongside cancer therapy. From a longevity perspective, it is a clear reminder that cancer survival and long-term organ health do not automatically go hand in hand.
