Children of centenarians live longer and stay healthier
If your parents live to 100, you may have inherited something valuable. A new study with nearly 4,000 participants shows that children of centenarians have significantly lower rates of heart disease and live an average of more than three years longer. But the reasons are more complicated than they appear.
Researchers compared three large longitudinal cohorts: LonGenity (New York), the New England Centenarian Study, and the UK Biobank. Together they included nearly 4,000 participants. Offspring of people who reached age 100 were compared with peers whose parents had shorter lifespans.
What the numbers show
The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that offspring of centenarians had a 42% lower risk of death (HR 0.58), a 33% lower risk of cardiovascular disease (HR 0.67), and a 32% lower risk of hypertension (HR 0.68). The average delay in death was 3.12 years; for hypertension it was 5.21 years. Cancer showed no significant difference across cohorts.
Genes or habits?
The open question is how much of this is genetic versus transmitted through lifestyle and behaviour. Earlier research using large population databases suggests that genetics plays only a modest role in life expectancy for most people. Physical fitness and lifestyle appear to be stronger influences. Centenarians themselves may carry favourable gene variants, but their offspring also inherit behaviours, dietary patterns, and habits. Both factors likely contribute, and this study design cannot disentangle them. The findings add new detail to an ongoing field of inquiry, reporting for the first time the specific delays in disease onset across three independent cohorts.
