Every aging mechanism also damages blood vessels

LongevityWatch editors · October 17, 2026 · 1 min

Blood vessels age through the same mechanisms as the rest of the body, but the consequences are outsized: atherosclerosis remains the leading cause of death worldwide. A new review maps how each known aging mechanism affects the vascular system.

Blood vessels are more than pipes. They regulate blood pressure, deliver nutrients to tissues, and keep harmful substances out. With age, they become stiffer, more prone to inflammation, and less capable of repair. That raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Senescent cells as the best-understood target

The review, based on existing literature on the vascular system, describes how all so-called hallmarks of aging (the scientifically recognized features of biological aging, including DNA damage, inflammation, and cellular senescence) manifest in the vasculature. Each mechanism contributes to breakdown of the vessel wall.

The authors argue that senescent cells (cells that have stopped dividing but are not cleared away) currently represent the best-understood therapeutic target. First-generation treatments that selectively address senescent cells have shown promising results in animal models for vascular health.

The authors are realistic about limitations. Regulatory frameworks require large clinical trials before new treatments become widely available. This takes time, even for treatments that are already inexpensive and available as research tools.

More than just atherosclerosis

The review goes beyond atherosclerosis. It describes how blood vessels become leaky with age where they should not be, how the capillary network thins and supplies tissues less effectively, and how smooth muscle cells surrounding vessels respond less reliably to signals for dilation or constriction.

This is a review article, not a report of new experimental research. It provides a useful framework for anyone seeking to understand how the biology of aging and vascular health are connected.
