Intermittent fasting extends lifespan in male mice

Restricting food access to an eight-hour window each day increased median lifespan by 12 percent in male mice. That sounds promising, but the researchers themselves flag an important caveat.

Intermittent fasting, also known as time-restricted feeding, is a dietary strategy in which food is available only during a limited daily window. Mouse studies have previously shown health benefits from this approach. The key question is always whether it is the time window itself that makes the difference, or whether the animals simply eat less.

The researchers report that male mice given access to food for only eight hours per day had a median lifespan 12 percent higher than animals with unrestricted access. Female mice did not show the same effect. The researchers note, however, that caloric intake in the time-restricted group was likely also lower. The mice probably simply ate less because they had fewer opportunities to feed.

Untangling the mechanism

The distinction between time-restricted feeding and caloric restriction (consuming fewer calories overall) is crucial. Caloric restriction has been shown for decades to extend lifespan in mice. If the time window merely results in less eating, there is no evidence that the daily rhythm itself adds anything. Future studies need to control caloric intake to isolate the effect of the feeding window.

What does this mean for people?

Results in mice do not automatically translate to humans. In humans, the effects of intermittent fasting on health markers are promising but modest, and lifespan studies are of course not feasible. The finding is an interesting signal but does not yet justify strong claims about extending human lifespan. The sex difference observed in this mouse study is also a reason to be cautious about broad generalisations.
