Lifestyle risks linked to nearly half of dementia cases
Nearly half of all dementia cases may be delayed by addressing risk factors that people can actually change. That is the finding of a long-term brain study in older adults.
Vascular dementia, dementia caused by disrupted blood flow to the brain, is strongly associated with common cardiovascular risk factors. The study followed participants over time and analyzed the relationship between risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, heart disease, and elevated blood lipids, and brain changes associated with vascular dementia. The findings suggest that close to half of dementia cases may be linked to these modifiable risk factors, though this is an association study that cannot establish causation.
What distinguishes the research is its focus on multiple brain damage markers simultaneously. Each risk factor was individually associated with specific brain changes. The combination of factors such as smoking and high blood pressure was more strongly associated with brain abnormalities than any single risk alone. This suggests that addressing multiple risk factors at once may have greater impact than targeting one problem in isolation.
What ‘modifiable’ actually means
Modifiable risk factors are factors that people can in principle change through lifestyle or medication. Stopping smoking, regulating blood pressure, and treating cholesterol all fall into this category. It is important to note that these are population-level associations. The fact that a risk factor is associated with more dementia in large groups does not mean every person who smokes or has high blood pressure will develop dementia, or that changing that factor will certainly prevent the disease.
Delaying dementia as a realistic goal
The study deliberately uses the term ‘delay’ rather than ‘prevent’. Even a few years’ delay in dementia onset has major consequences for quality of life and care burden. From a longevity perspective, vascular health and brain aging are closely intertwined, and early intervention across multiple risk factors simultaneously appears to offer the greatest benefit.
