Neanderthals spent 350,000 years on the brink of extinction
Neanderthals are often portrayed as rugged survivors who only died out because modern humans showed up. But a new analysis shows their populations had been teetering on the edge for hundreds of thousands of years before their final disappearance.
Published in Science, the study reconstructs the demographic history of Neanderthals across a span of 350,000 years. The conclusion is sobering: their populations were small, fragmented, and fragile. Genetic diversity was low, pointing to repeated bottlenecks, moments when the total population shrank dramatically. They recovered each time, but never fully.
The picture that emerges is not one of a successful hominin suddenly brought down by a smarter rival. It is more that of a species that was chronically on the edge, decade after decade, ice age after ice age. Small populations are more vulnerable to disease, climate swings, and bad luck. Genetically impoverished groups adapt less readily. Whether Homo sapiens delivered the actual killing blow, or merely gave a final push to something already falling, is a question this kind of research makes harder and harder to answer cleanly.
What this tells us about long-term survival
The demographic vulnerability of Neanderthals has broader implications for how we think about the survival of species, and of populations within species. Small, isolated groups accumulate harmful mutations faster than large, mixed ones. That principle holds for every mammal, humans included. Genetic diversity is not an abstract concept; it is a survival strategy.
For longevity science, the parallel is interesting, if indirect. The study illustrates how demographic and genetic factors determine, over the long run, who survives and who does not. The genetic ‘wear and tear’ that builds up in small populations, an accumulation of mildly harmful variants that slip past evolutionary purging, is conceptually related to the theory of antagonistic pleiotropy in aging biology: genes that are beneficial early in life can become damaging later on, and evolution has no incentive to eliminate them if they do not affect reproduction.
A species that could not save itself
350,000 years is a long time to survive. But it is also a long time to never truly thrive. Neanderthals made tools, buried their dead, wore ornaments, and weathered multiple glacial cycles. Yet they never managed to cross the population threshold beyond which a species becomes genuinely resilient.
What ultimately finished them off, whether climate, disease, competition with Homo sapiens, or simply the cumulative weight of genetic erosion, remains partly unanswered. And it probably always will.
