NewLimit raises $435 million for liver therapy

A startup aiming to reverse aging has raised nearly half a billion dollars. And it is now ready to treat its first human patients, not for aging itself, but for a liver disease.

NewLimit is an American longevity company focused on epigenetic reprogramming: the idea that aged cells can be made to behave like younger ones by adjusting their gene activity patterns. The company raised $435 million in a Series C financing round led by Founders Fund, the venture capital firm co-founded by Peter Thiel. Other investors include Thrive Capital and Lilly Ventures. NewLimit is now valued at around $3.1 billion.

The company plans to use the funds for its first clinical trial. That trial targets a specific liver disease rather than aging broadly. This is a deliberate choice: regulators like the FDA evaluate treatments for specific conditions, not for aging as a diagnosis. By entering the market through a liver indication, NewLimit can follow an established approval pathway.

Epigenetic reprogramming as a strategy

Epigenetic reprogramming means adjusting the chemical marks on DNA that determine which genes are active. With age, those marks change in ways that appear to track with aging and functional decline. In theory it is possible to partially restore those marks to a younger state without losing the cell’s identity. There is evidence this works in mice. Whether it is safe and effective in humans is what the clinical trial needs to determine.

The scale of the investment is striking for a company that has not yet completed a human trial. It reflects growing interest from major investors in longevity biotechnology, as well as a willingness to take large risks early. Clinical trials for genetic and epigenetic therapies are expensive and slow. It will be years before there is clarity on effectiveness.

What this signals for the sector

NewLimit is not alone. Multiple companies are working on epigenetic reprogramming as a therapy. The race to produce the first clinical evidence in humans has begun. Whoever first demonstrates safety and efficacy in people will have a significant advantage. The $435 million investment makes NewLimit one of the best-funded players in this space.
