Orangutans take eight years to master survival

Orangutans learn their survival skills over a period of eight years. That is exceptionally long for an animal. Researchers tracked young orangutans in the wild and precisely mapped which knowledge they absorbed from their mothers and which they developed on their own.

The study, published in Science, shows that social learning (observing others) and individual learning (trial and error) both play major roles, but at different phases of development. In early years, learning from the mother dominates. Later, independent learning takes over.

A long childhood as an evolutionary advantage

That extended learning period has a biological basis. Animals that inhabit complex environments, such as tropical rainforests with hundreds of different food sources, need more time to build the knowledge required to survive to old age. A longer childhood goes hand in hand with a slower life cycle and, generally, a longer lifespan.

For longevity researchers, this is relevant: there appears to be a pattern across species linking cognitive complexity, learning duration, and lifespan. Wild orangutans live to 45 to 50 years, which is remarkably long for mammals of their body size.

What this tells us about human aging

Humans have the longest learning period of all primates. Our childhood and adolescence last longer than in any other ape. The findings in orangutans support the idea that a long learning period evolved together with more complex social structures and a longer life expectancy.

The study does not offer direct targets for medical intervention, but it deepens our understanding of why some species, including humans, live so long relative to their body size. That question sits at the heart of evolutionary aging research.
