Personalised cancer vaccine gets new momentum with mRNA
The mRNA platform that powered Covid vaccines is now being used against cancer. Promising results in advanced melanoma are reigniting optimism about what the technology can do next.
mRNA technology works by delivering genetic instructions that tell cells to produce a specific protein. In a personalised cancer vaccine, those instructions describe fragments of the patient’s own tumour-specific proteins. The immune system learns to recognise those fragments and attack cancer cells carrying them.
Moderna and Merck reported clinical success with a personalised mRNA vaccine in melanoma (skin cancer). According to STAT News, this is fuelling hopes for a more stable future for the mRNA field after political turbulence following the Covid pandemic. The results are specific to advanced melanoma, not cancer in general.
How a personalised vaccine works
Conventional vaccines show the immune system an example of a pathogen. A personalised cancer vaccine does something different: it is custom-built for a single patient, based on the unique mutations in their tumour. That makes it expensive and time-consuming to produce, but potentially more precise than existing therapies.
The melanoma results are encouraging. Experts describe them as proof of concept, not as a definitive cure for all cancers. The potential to apply mRNA against other tumour types exists, but each case requires separate investigation.
Politics and science intertwined
mRNA technology still carries political weight, a legacy of Covid vaccine debates. Researchers hope that success in cancer could make the word ‘vaccine’ less charged in sceptical parts of society. Whether that holds is uncertain. What is clear is that the platform’s ability to quickly encode new proteins makes it relevant well beyond infectious disease, and longevity researchers are watching closely.
