Sepsis AI sends too many alerts to be
Doctors are increasingly ignoring sepsis detection alerts. Not because they take the condition less seriously, but because the algorithm raises false alarms so often that clinicians have learned to distrust it.
Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection that kills more than 350,000 people in the United States every year. Early intervention is critical. Hospitals use algorithms to flag patients at risk before the situation deteriorates. But the investigation into a widely used system from software company Epic found that it generated so many false alarms that doctors began systematically disregarding its alerts.
The problem is called alert fatigue. It is a well-documented phenomenon in medicine. The more notifications clinicians receive, the less weight each individual alert carries. An algorithm tuned to be overly sensitive does not just become useless. It becomes potentially dangerous: genuine alarms drown in the noise.
Better algorithms do not automatically win
Newer vendors claim their systems outperform Epic’s. But the research also shows that technical superiority does not automatically lead to adoption. Hospitals are cautious about switching systems. Integration with existing software, costs, and clinician trust all factor into the decision.
An algorithm that scores better in benchmarks must also be more reliable in practice. That means fewer false positives, smoother integration into clinical workflows, and transparent reasoning. Doctors want to know why a system is raising an alarm, not just that it has.
Relevant to aging and hospital care
Sepsis affects older adults disproportionately. The immune system responds more slowly and less precisely with age, allowing infections to escalate faster. Better detection is therefore also a longevity issue: as people live longer, more are at risk. A reliable alert system that clinicians actually trust can make the difference between early intervention and arriving too late.
