Short intense exercise triggers the widest signal wave
A few minutes of all-out cycling sets more biological processes in motion than ninety minutes of steady moderate pedalling. That is the finding of a new study examining what happens in the blood after different types of exercise.
Scientists at The Rockefeller University had young, active, and metabolically healthy men perform two types of exercise. One group did sprint-interval training: six sets of thirty seconds of all-out cycling with four-minute rest periods in between. The other group cycled at a moderate pace for ninety minutes. Afterwards, the researchers measured in detail which proteins and metabolites were circulating in the blood.
The study found that the short, intense workout influenced nearly a quarter of all measured proteins in the blood. These included substances involved in the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), remodelling of the structural tissue outside cells (extracellular matrix), gut signalling, and possible regulation of the nervous system. Most of these proteins returned to resting levels within three hours. Moderate exercise produced mainly a delayed response: more substances were released into the blood only three hours after finishing.
The same pattern after eight weeks of training
The researchers repeated the measurements after eight weeks of training. The pattern remained similar. They also tested runners and found comparable results. This suggests that the observed differences are linked to exercise intensity, not to the type of sport or a person’s training background.
What this means for longevity
From a longevity perspective, this is interesting, though the interpretation requires caution. This study was conducted in young men. Whether the same signals apply to older people or women has not been examined. It is also not yet clear which of these proteins actually lead to long-term health benefits. The finding that a few minutes of intense exercise generates a broad molecular signal raises an intriguing question: do you need to exercise for a long time for maximum effect, or is it smarter to go very hard occasionally? The researchers suggest that intensity is at least as relevant as duration, but that conclusion still needs to be tested in larger and more diverse groups.
