Sugar drove human evolution more than we knew

Sugar has a bad reputation in today’s nutrition debate. But a new analysis in Science argues that carbohydrates and sugars played a central role in human evolution, with implications for how we understand aging and metabolic disease.

Researchers published a comprehensive analysis in Science on the role of dietary sugars in human evolutionary history. The study argues that humans evolved specific genetic adaptations to process sugars efficiently, adaptations that were likely essential for the energy demands of large human brains and the unique human reproductive strategy.

Compared with other primates, humans carry more copies of the gene for amylase, an enzyme that begins breaking down starch into sugars in the mouth. This points to a long co-evolution of humans with carbohydrate-rich foods, including tubers, fruit, and later grains. The researchers argue that sugar was not a byproduct of human evolution but an active driver of it.

From evolutionary adaptation to modern problem

The same adaptations that helped our ancestors survive may, in an environment of constant sugar abundance, contribute to metabolic problems such as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition in which cells respond less effectively to the hormone insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels and, over time, to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and accelerated aging.

The authors suggest that genetic variation in sugar-processing genes partly determines how vulnerable individuals are to these metabolic conditions. This is relevant for longevity research: biological aging rate is partly linked to metabolic health, and metabolic vulnerability has a partial genetic basis that can be understood through evolutionary history.

What this does not mean

The study is an evolutionary analysis, not a clinical intervention trial. It makes no recommendation about sugar intake. The findings explain why humans process sugar so efficiently, not whether sugar is beneficial or harmful in today’s context. That distinction matters: evolutionary advantage and contemporary health outcome are not the same thing.
