The aging cerebellum keeps working past 80
The brain shrinks and loses structure over time. Yet one region does something unexpected: it keeps functioning almost as well as it did decades earlier. Even in people over 80, the cerebellum handles motor tasks at a level comparable to young adults.
The cerebellum coordinates movement, balance, and fine motor control. Brain scans clearly show that it changes structurally with age: volume decreases and connections between cells become less dense. The common assumption has been that this structural decline would translate directly into functional problems.
Three age groups, seven motor tasks
The researchers tested 160 people across three groups: 50 young adults (20-35 years), 80 older adults (55-70 years), and 30 people over 80. All participants completed a battery of seven motor tasks and one cognitive task, each specifically designed to measure cerebellum-specific functions. The findings were published in the journal eLife.
The results were striking. Cerebellum-specific functions remained intact in older adults compared with the youngest group. Even participants over 80 performed comparably to young adults on these tasks. General sensorimotor measures, such as reaction time and overall coordination, did show a clear decline with age.
Functional resilience as a key concept
The researchers describe this as functional resilience: the capacity of a brain region to maintain its role despite structural damage. That the cerebellum shows this to such a strong degree is surprising. It suggests that structural changes in the brain do not automatically translate into loss of the corresponding ability. For longevity research, this matters: not every measurable sign of brain aging leads to a loss of function. What gives the cerebellum this resilience remains unknown and warrants further investigation.
