Turning back the clock on cells -- the FDA says yes
The US drug regulator does not officially recognise ageing as a disease. Yet this year, for the first time, a therapy designed to make cells biologically younger is heading into the clinic. That marks a break with twenty years of stagnation.
Life Biosciences is about to launch its first human clinical trial using a technique called cellular reprogramming, a process in which adult cells are walked back to an earlier, younger state through genetic signals. In this case the therapy targets the eye, specifically age-related eye diseases. But the broader implications reach far beyond that, as Lifespan.io reports.
The crucial point here is not just the technology itself, which has been in development for several years, but the fact that the FDA has given the green light to a study whose explicit goal is to reverse biological ageing. The FDA classifies ageing as an ordinary biological process, not a condition against which you can file a drug application. That has blocked the approval pathway for anti-ageing therapies for years. If this trial succeeds, it could set a precedent.
How reprogramming works, and why it carries risks
Cellular reprogramming relies on what are known as Yamanaka factors: a set of four proteins (OCT4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC) discovered by Japanese researcher Shinya Yamanaka, who won the Nobel Prize for the work in 2012. Briefly activating these factors inside a cell can partially reset its epigenetic profile -- the pattern of marks that tracks which genes are switched on or off and that shifts with age -- without the cell losing its identity. That sounds promising, but running the full process leads to uncontrolled cell growth and an elevated cancer risk. Partial reprogramming, in which the factors are switched on only temporarily, is the approach now being tested in the clinic.
Choosing the eye as the first target is strategically shrewd. The eye is immunologically isolated from the rest of the body, so if something goes wrong, the damage stays contained. On top of that, eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration are easy to measure and clearly linked to ageing.
A turning point for the whole sector
If this trial succeeds, it opens doors not only for Life Biosciences but for the entire longevity industry. It would signal that the FDA is willing to accept ageing itself -- or at least its biological consequences -- as a legitimate target for therapeutic intervention. That would make billions of dollars in research investment considerably more attractive. It is early days, but this is a moment worth watching.
