Can low blood sugar disrupt your hormones, and how do you notice it?

When your blood sugar drops too low, your body triggers a hormonal alarm. Adrenaline, cortisol, glucagon and growth hormone are released to bring sugar levels back up. That adrenaline spike also explains the classic symptoms: trembling, sweating, heart palpitations, anxiety and hunger. Cortisol gives you a rushed or more irritable feeling. This pattern is well documented and is considered a direct response to the fall in blood sugar.

The tricky part is that this warning system starts to function less well in people who frequently experience low blood sugar. The body sends out increasingly unclear signals, making it harder to feel a serious dip coming. That makes repeated hypoglycaemia especially dangerous: not only do the symptoms become more vague, but the hormonal response itself also weakens.

The brain notices low blood sugar early on. Difficulty concentrating, irritability and confusion are all part of that. With prolonged or severe episodes, damage can occur to the memory centre. At the same time, there are indications that nerves outside the brain can also be affected, although this is less well studied in humans than in animal experiments.

Hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes has also been linked to a higher risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Whether this is purely due to low blood sugar or partly due to other factors is not yet fully clear. In any case, it is reason to take low blood sugar levels seriously, even when you barely notice them at the time.

An important nuance: in severe liver disease, the hormonal disruption works in the opposite direction. In that case, the low blood sugar is a symptom of the larger liver problem, not the cause of all hormonal complaints. So if you regularly experience low blood sugar without a clear reason, discuss it with your doctor, especially if you also have other symptoms.
