Exercise slows down ovarian aging
Women who are more physically active reach menopause later in life. A study of more than 150,000 participants suggests the protein adiponectin may explain why.
Researchers found that physical activity slows the biological aging of ovaries. The study, published in Nature Aging, combined large-scale data from over 150,000 women with mouse experiments. In mice that exercised regularly, ovarian tissue aged noticeably more slowly than in sedentary animals.
Adiponectin, a protein released by fat tissue during physical activity, appears to be a key mediator. When researchers used mice lacking the gene for adiponectin, the protective effect of exercise was largely abolished. This points to adiponectin as a molecular link between physical activity and ovarian health, though the precise pathway in humans remains to be confirmed.
Why ovarian aging matters for longevity
The ovaries age faster than most other organs. The quantity and quality of eggs declines from around age 30 onward. This process of follicular depletion largely determines when menopause occurs. Earlier menopause has been associated in other research with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and bone loss (osteoporosis) later in life.
Whether delaying menopause through exercise also reduces those downstream risks was not directly tested here. The association between higher activity levels and later menopause is consistent across the large participant group, but causality in humans has not been established. The researchers identify adiponectin as a potential therapeutic target, but the step from mechanism to clinical application is substantial.
A behavioral lever for reproductive longevity
From a longevity perspective, the finding is notable because the ovaries effectively function as a biological clock for female aging. If physical activity genuinely slows that clock, partly through adiponectin signaling, exercise may benefit reproductive health over the long term, not just cardiovascular and muscular health.
How much exercise is needed, and what type is most effective, remains unclear. The study does not distinguish between exercise intensity or modality.
