Blood cell cloning accelerates biological ageing

Some people carry a silent time bomb in their blood: stem cells with a small genetic mutation that gradually multiply and take over blood cell production. New research suggests this phenomenon also affects the pace of ageing throughout the entire body.

The phenomenon is called clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential, or CHIP. It means a small group of blood stem cells, carrying a mutation that confers a growth advantage, progressively produces more and more blood cells. CHIP occurs in around 10 percent of people over sixty and becomes more common with age. It was already known to raise the risk of blood cancers and cardiovascular disease.

Two new analyses, discussed in the Fight Aging! newsletter, add another dimension. The researchers found that CHIP is associated with a higher biological age, as measured by epigenetic clocks. These clocks assess ageing through chemical tags on DNA (methylation), independently of a person’s calendar age. People with CHIP appeared biologically older than people of the same age without CHIP.

Cause or consequence?

It is not yet clear whether CHIP drives ageing, or whether both are the result of shared underlying processes. CHIP cells produce more pro-inflammatory molecules, consistent with the broader picture of inflammaging: chronic low-grade inflammation as a hallmark of ageing. That inflammation may in turn accelerate epigenetic ageing.

The findings are observational. Causality has not been established. They do, however, underscore the importance of CHIP as a potential intersection between blood cell biology and systemic ageing.

Why this matters for longevity

CHIP is typically discovered incidentally during blood tests. No proven interventions safely reduce CHIP burden yet. But if CHIP does drive systemic ageing through inflammation, it is a potential target for future therapies. Research into this intersection is still in its early stages.
