Blood test predicts liver disease sixteen years early
A blood test could predict who will develop liver disease up to sixteen years before diagnosis. Researchers identified protein patterns in stored blood samples that signal future disease long before any symptoms appear.
The condition is called MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fat accumulates in the liver and, if untreated, can progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer. The challenge is that the disease causes no symptoms for years, meaning many people are only diagnosed once significant damage has occurred.
Proteins in the blood reveal hidden liver risk
Researchers analysed hundreds of proteins (a field called proteomics) in blood samples stored over many years. They looked for patterns that preceded a MASLD diagnosis. The study, published in Nature Aging, found that a specific protein signature was already present in blood up to sixteen years before diagnosis in people who later developed MASLD.
This is not a single biomarker but a combination of signals. The pattern likely reflects early disturbances in metabolism, liver function and immune activity. The researchers suggest it could form the basis of a risk-screening tool, enabling earlier intervention through lifestyle changes or targeted treatment.
Early detection as a longevity strategy
From a longevity perspective, this matters because liver disease is closely linked to metabolic ageing. Fat accumulation in the liver typically coincides with insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation (inflammaging), both of which are associated with accelerated biological ageing. A reliable early marker could give patients and clinicians a significant head start.
The researchers caution that findings need validation in larger, more diverse populations. This is a promising result but not yet a ready-to-use screening test. The proteomic method is also currently expensive. The next step is identifying which proteins carry the most predictive power, paving the way for a simpler and more affordable test.
The broader implication remains striking: for conditions that develop silently over decades, early detection is the most powerful tool available. A blood test that warns more than a decade in advance could fundamentally reshape how preventive healthcare is organised.
