Brain health and aging take center stage at a new conference: what do we actually know about neural decline?

As longevity research races ahead, one organ keeps getting left behind when it comes to treatment options: the brain. A new conference in Boston is trying to change that by bringing neuroscientists, investors, and policymakers into the same room.

The NOVA conference, Neuroscience of Vitality and Aging, is coming to Boston for the first time, centered on a question that grows more urgent by the year: how do you preserve brain health as you age, and how do you accelerate the fight against neurodegenerative disease? The event is organized by the Aging Initiative, a nonprofit working to strengthen the longevity research ecosystem across New England.

Neurodegeneration is, in a real sense, the blind spot of the longevity movement. Interventions such as senolytics, mitochondrial therapies, and reprogramming largely target peripheral tissues. The brain is harder to reach, shielded by the blood-brain barrier, and fundamentally different in how it manages its cells. Neurons rarely divide, which makes replacement through stem cell therapy far more complicated than it sounds. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's have resisted effective treatment despite decades of research.

The gap between scientific breakthroughs and clinical reality

Fundamental brain research has produced some striking results in recent years: from the discovery of glymphatic clearance during sleep to fresh insights into neuroinflammation and the role of microglia in Alzheimer's. Yet translating those findings into effective treatments remains stubbornly slow. Most clinical trials for Alzheimer's have failed, and even recently approved drugs such as lecanemab show limited clinical benefit despite evidence that they work at a biological level.

NOVA positions itself as a bridge between those worlds: science, biotechnology, policy, and investment. Whether that is the right formula for breaking the deadlock is far from certain. Conferences build networks, not always breakthroughs. But the signal that brain health is being treated as a full part of the longevity agenda, rather than a separate neurological domain, is itself a shift worth paying attention to.
