Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder in which nerve cells that make dopamine are slowly lost. This causes tremor, stiffness and slower movement, and often non-motor symptoms as well.

Practical use

For whom

Anyone who wants to lower their risk of Parkinson's, and people with Parkinson's: exercise helps in both cases.

Not for whom

Stretching alone does little; choose a form that also trains fitness and motor skills.

In practice

Exercise regularly. With Parkinson's, dance and water-based exercise work best, in consultation with your care team. Avoid exposure to pesticides.

Key caveats

Whether exercise slows the disease itself is not proven. Always discuss treatments such as GLP-1 drugs or ibogaine with your neurologist.

What we know, and don't

Known

More exercise is linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's
Exercise reduces motor symptoms
Avoiding pesticides makes sense

Not yet

Whether anything slows the disease itself
Whether GLP-1 drugs help in the long term
Whether coffee or a Mediterranean diet protects
Common misconceptions
"Once you have Parkinson's, exercise no longer matters."
False. Almost every form of exercise noticeably reduces symptoms.Strong evidence
"Ibogaine is an alternative treatment for Parkinson's."
Not shown. It has not been studied in people with Parkinson's and can be dangerous for the heart.Preliminary evidence
