Collagen, skin cycling, Vaseline: what the science actually says about skin care right now

From collagen supplements to skin cycling and slugging: skin care claims are multiplying far faster than the research can keep up. Here is where the evidence got stronger, where it disappointed, and where science still has no verdict.

The skin care industry generates promises faster than researchers can publish studies. Even so, the scientific picture is steadily filling in, and if you are over forty -- the age at which visible ageing noticeably accelerates -- it is worth keeping track of what is proven, what is not, and what remains genuinely unclear. Here is what recent research has turned up for Skin.

Sun protection and sleep: the fundamentals hold firm

The most well-supported way to slow skin ageing is still wearing sunscreen every day. Most visible ageing -- wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity -- comes from UV damage, and the evidence for that is consistent across multiple studies. Not smoking and drinking moderately reinforce that effect in a measurable way. Sleep ranks a little lower on the priority list, but you cannot dismiss it: even a single bad night demonstrably worsens hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth. The pattern across studies is consistent enough to treat sleep as a serious factor, even though large long-term trials are still missing.

Collagen supplements: modest effects, serious funding questions

This is where the most talked-about tension of the year lies. Analyses of placebo-controlled studies involving more than 3,000 participants show that hydrolysed collagen can meaningfully reduce wrinkles and improve hydration and elasticity. Doses used ranged from 2.5 to 10 grams per day over 8 to 16 weeks. The effects are real, but modest. The big catch: when you look only at independently funded, higher-quality research, the positive results disappear. Industry-funded trials are systematically more flattering. That does not mean collagen is useless, but it does make the claim "proven effective" impossible to sustain. Take it without high expectations, and keep in mind that the positive story is largely being written by the industry itself.

Layer by layer: what thinning skin actually means

One mechanism that came into sharper focus this year: both the outer and deeper layers of the skin thin with age, a finding consistently demonstrated in well-designed research. This goes hand in hand with a weakened skin barrier and slower wound healing. Of all available interventions, retinoids have the strongest evidence base for slowing that process. Stronger versions such as tretinoin require a prescription; over-the-counter retinol is less potent but a genuine starting point.

Peptides and hyaluronic acid: sensible choices, not miracle workers

Among over-the-counter ingredients for ageing skin, topical peptides have the best scientific backing, though the question of whether they penetrate deeply enough to reach their target remains open. The effect is modest and cannot be compared with prescription tretinoin. If you want to get the most out of your routine, you are better off discussing tretinoin with a doctor; peptides are a real but less powerful alternative.

Hyaluronic acid in a cream or serum demonstrably helps with dryness. Injections work best against wrinkles. Oral supplements show promising signals in small studies, but add little if you are already taking collagen. The same caveat applies here: some of the research is manufacturer-funded, which can skew results in a favourable direction.

Skin cycling and slugging: the trend versus the ingredients

Skin cycling -- the social media routine of alternating retinol, exfoliants and recovery creams -- has never been clinically tested as a method. You cannot say it works better than a straightforward routine. The individual ingredients, ceramides and urea in a moisturiser, do have a reasonable scientific basis for barrier repair. The schedule built around them has not yet been shown to add anything on its own.

Slugging -- sealing your skin with Vaseline -- works exactly as advertised: it reduces moisture loss, demonstrably better than plant-based oils. If your goal is not just locking in moisture but structurally improving dry or damaged skin, ceramide moisturisers are more effective. Vaseline works best as a complement, not a replacement.

What science still cannot tell you

Whether the skin ages faster than internal organs -- a question that circulates widely in longevity circles -- is something current research cannot answer. What is established is that the skin has a specific vulnerability of its own: the loss of repair-supporting immune cells around small blood vessels, something that does not automatically apply to every other organ. Research into influencing internal ageing processes within the skin is still in its early stages. If you want to know how quickly your organs are biologically ageing, biological clock measurements are available, but those too are still very much a work in progress.

The bottom line right now: sun protection and sleep keep their lead, retinoids and ceramides are solid choices, and collagen may work, but the evidence is still not free of commercial interests. The most hyped routines and trends continue to run well ahead of the research.
