Diet lowers biological age in just four weeks
Changing what you eat for just four weeks can measurably lower your biological age. That is the finding of a recently published study in older adults.
Biological age is distinct from chronological age. It reflects how fast your body is aging at the cellular level, estimated using aging clocks (tools that read patterns in your DNA to produce an aging estimate). In a group of older participants who changed their diet, biological age dropped measurably within four weeks.
Which dietary change made the difference?
Participants adjusted the ratio of fats, carbohydrates, and animal protein in their diet. The strongest result appeared in those eating an omnivorous, lower-fat, higher-carbohydrate diet, according to the researchers. That is notable, given the widespread assumption that carbohydrates accelerate aging-related processes.
This was a short four-week study. Whether the effect persists over longer periods remains unanswered. The findings are preliminary and specific to the participants in this trial. Broad generalization is premature.
What does this mean for longevity research?
Using diet to shift aging markers is not a new idea, but studies showing an actual change in biological age within weeks are rare. From a longevity perspective, this suggests that aging markers may be more responsive to diet composition than previously assumed.
Caution is warranted, however. A lower biological age score does not automatically mean better health or a longer life. That requires longer studies with hard outcomes. What this research does show is that macronutrient balance, not just calorie count, appears to have a measurable influence on the rate at which the body ages.
