GLP-1 drug retatrutide fuels a growing black market
Retatrutide has not yet been officially approved, but a large illegal market for it already exists. Eli Lilly is now moving to shut it down. The situation raises questions about access, safety, and the future of GLP-1 drugs in aging research.
Retatrutide is an experimental drug from Eli Lilly that activates three hormone receptors simultaneously: those for GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. While approved GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide activate one or two of these receptors, retatrutide targets all three at once. In clinical trials, that produced greater weight reduction than other agents in this class. Reports about the black market came from STAT News.
The drug is circulating online and in gyms as ‘reta’, without a prescription and outside clinical supervision. Lilly has announced legal action against distributors of unauthorized versions. At the same time, legitimate access remains limited: retatrutide has not yet received FDA approval.
What drives the appeal
GLP-1 drugs do more than reduce weight. Research suggests they also lower inflammatory markers, improve liver function, and may offer cardiovascular benefits. For those with a longevity focus, those are attractive effects. But retatrutide is still in clinical development. Its full long-term safety profile has not been established.
Safety and the black market
Drugs produced outside regulated frameworks are not subject to quality control. Dosing, purity, and formulation can differ substantially from clinical standards. That carries real risks, particularly for a drug whose safety margins are not yet fully defined. Researchers and physicians caution that use outside a clinical context is premature.
The rise of a black market for retatrutide illustrates a broader tension: demand for agents that slow metabolic decline or aging runs well ahead of the availability of safely validated products.
