Perimenopause Movement Spreads Health Misinformation
Online communities around perimenopause are growing fast. Women share experiences, recommendations and products. But part of what circulates is simply wrong. And that has real consequences for women’s health.
Perimenopause is the period of hormonal transition before menopause. It can last years and involve sleep problems, mood changes and other symptoms. The increased attention is understandable: many women felt their symptoms had long not been taken seriously by doctors.
But the clinicians and researchers featured in a STAT News analysis argue that the movement also has a downside. Influencers promote supplements and hormonal preparations without scientific backing. Women are encouraged to self-experiment with hormones, sometimes on the basis of tests that have not been clinically validated.
Supplements without evidence
A recurring pattern is that supplements are marketed as an alternative to or complement for hormone therapy, without good evidence for their effectiveness. At the same time, actual hormone therapy is sometimes portrayed as dangerous, based on outdated or incorrectly interpreted research data.
That is a problem. Hormone therapy is an effective treatment with a favourable risk profile for some women with severe symptoms. If women avoid it based on misinformation and instead choose unproven products, that can harm their health.
Aging and hormones
The hormonal changes during and after menopause have effects that extend beyond short-term symptoms. They influence bone density, cardiovascular disease risk and long-term cognitive health. That makes the quality of information on this topic particularly relevant for women thinking about healthy aging.
The authors do not argue for suppressing the perimenopause movement, but for better science communication. Doctors and researchers need to be more actively present in the spaces where women get their information.
