Seafood compound reverses aging signs in older mice

A substance found in edible sea squirts improved memory, reduced inflammation, and even gave older mice thicker, darker fur. The results are preliminary, but researchers see potential relevance to human aging.

Plasmalogens are a type of fat molecule naturally found in cell membranes. They play a role in the transmission of signals between brain cells (synapses) and in protecting cells from damage. Levels of plasmalogens decline with age, and some researchers link this drop to cognitive decline.

In this animal study, older mice were given plasmalogen supplements derived from sea squirts, an edible marine invertebrate. The researchers reported improvements in memory and learning, stronger connections between brain cells, and reduced signs of chronic low-grade inflammation, sometimes called inflammaging. The mice also grew thicker, darker coats, suggesting a broader effect on aging beyond the brain.

Neurogenesis and synapse protection

The team proposed two mechanisms: plasmalogens may stimulate the formation of new brain cells (neurogenesis) and protect existing synaptic connections from age-related damage. These are promising leads, but the jump from mouse biology to human aging is large and has not yet been made.

Inflammaging, the chronic low-level inflammation that accumulates with age, is one of the most consistently documented features of biological aging. The apparent ability of plasmalogens to dampen this process in mice is noteworthy from a longevity perspective, but human trials are needed before any conclusions can be drawn.

What this study does not yet show

Plasmalogen supplements are already commercially available, but the evidence in humans remains sparse. This study demonstrates effects in mice, not people. Dosage, safety, and efficacy in humans still need to be established. Treat these findings as a signal, not as proof that supplementation works.
