Some aging diseases may be biologically unavoidable
Eat well, exercise, manage stress. We know the advice. But what if some diseases of old age are unavoidable no matter how well you live? That is the central claim of a new theoretical framework on aging.
The standard explanation for age-related disease is evolutionary mismatch: our bodies were not built for modern diets, sedentary lives, and chronic stress. But that explanation has a problem. Even hunter-gatherers living under ancestral conditions show signs of cardiovascular trouble, metabolic dysfunction, and immune decline past the age of 60.
An alternative: the cost of adaptation
The researchers call their framework the Adaptive Cost Hypothesis. It proposes that many age-related diseases are not consequences of poor lifestyle choices, but of biological mechanisms that were beneficial, even essential, early in life. Evolution selected for these mechanisms because they promoted reproduction, not because they are helpful across a lifespan of 80 or 90 years. This connects to the concept of antagonistic pleiotropy, where a single gene or biological system can simultaneously benefit young individuals and cause harm in older ones.
What this means for prevention
The hypothesis does not dismiss lifestyle entirely. Healthy living likely delays the onset of disease. But the authors argue that some conditions are deeply embedded in our evolutionary blueprint and will emerge if we live long enough. That is an uncomfortable conclusion, but also a useful one. It suggests that longevity research must go beyond lifestyle interventions and target the underlying biological mechanisms themselves.
