The body has its own brake on inflammation

Your immune system has a built-in brake that can stop chronic inflammation. Researchers have now identified this mechanism and shown that it works in humans too.

Chronic inflammation (prolonged, low-grade activation of the immune system) is one of the central drivers of aging and age-related disease. It damages tissues, accelerates cellular aging, and is linked to conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dementia. A mechanism that dampens this process is therefore directly relevant to longevity.

How does this brake work?

Scientists uncovered a signaling pathway that actively switches off the immune system after it has completed its task. This pathway prevents harmful immune cells from accumulating. It is a natural checkpoint in the immune response, not an external drug.

Notably, in people in whom this pathway was boosted, inflammation-related immune changes decreased and pain relief was faster, according to the researchers. This gives the system clinical relevance, though the research is still early-stage. The magnitude and durability of the effects have not yet been fully established.

Why does this matter for chronic disease?

In many chronic inflammatory conditions, this brake appears insufficiently active. If that holds up, boosting this pathway could offer a new approach to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or chronic pain. That is different from broadly suppressing the immune system, which carries significant side effects.

For longevity research, the mechanism is also interesting outside of disease. If chronic low-grade inflammation partly determines how fast we age, then a body-own brake on that process is a promising target for future interventions. Follow-up research will need to determine whether this pathway plays a role in healthy aging as well.
