Heavy lifting protects your bones better than light movement
Walking and yoga feel great, but when it comes to your bones, intensity is what matters. High-intensity resistance training at 70 to 85 percent of your maximum load, done two to three times a week and sustained for at least eight to twelve months, consistently improves bone density in postmenopausal women. Research involving more than 1,300 participants points in the same direction every time: the heavier and more supervised the training, the better the results. If you also want to reduce your risk of falling, a combined programme of strength, balance and fitness is the better choice.
Your balance matters just as much as your bone density
Ninety percent of hip fractures result from a fall. That means strong bones alone are not enough – you also need to stay upright. Targeted balance training can reduce the number of falls by tens of percent, particularly when you put in more than three hours a week. This has been shown in independently living older adults across studies with around 20,000 participants. Tai chi, single-leg standing exercises and walking paths with varied surfaces are all solid options.
Calcium, vitamin D and protein are the foundation you cannot afford to skip
No training programme or medication works well in a body that lacks the building blocks. Adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein are the indispensable foundation for all women after menopause. Among people followed over many years, fermented dairy, plenty of vegetables and fruit, and a varied high-protein diet are all linked to fewer fractures. Soft drinks and excessive alcohol are the clearest dietary factors that raise fracture risk. A vegan diet without supplementation also raises the risk noticeably.
Hormone therapy demonstrably lowers fracture risk
For women going through menopause with significant symptoms and an elevated bone risk, hormone therapy is more than a comfort measure. Hormone therapy reduces fracture risk by 20 to 40 percent, making it one of the most powerful options available. Bisphosphonates offer comparable protection for women with confirmed osteoporosis. Soy isoflavones are widely marketed as a natural alternative to hormone therapy.
