Brain stimulation targets women’s health in later life
Electrical brain stimulation is already used to treat depression and epilepsy. Researchers are now exploring whether the same approach works for conditions that more commonly affect women in later life, including menopausal symptoms and chronic pain. Early results are promising, but the field is still in its early stages.
In a perspectives piece published in Science, researchers describe how both non-invasive and invasive forms of brain stimulation are being investigated as therapies for health problems disproportionately affecting women. These include chronic pelvic pain, migraine, and the neurological effects of hormonal changes during and after menopause.
Hormones and brain activity are linked
In women, fluctuating hormone levels directly influence brain activity. Oestrogen (the primary female sex hormone) has receptors across large parts of the brain. When oestrogen levels fall, the way brain circuits communicate changes. This partly explains why menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, and mood changes also involve brain processes. The researchers propose that brain stimulation could potentially correct or support those circuits, alone or in combination with other treatments.
Non-invasive techniques, requiring no surgery, include transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcutaneous electrical stimulation. Invasive variants, involving electrodes placed in or near the brain, allow more precise targeting but carry greater risk.
Much still unknown, but the direction is clear
This is a perspectives article: a discussion of ongoing and future research, not clinical proof of effectiveness. The researchers emphasise that women have historically been underrepresented in clinical studies on brain stimulation, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions. Research specifically focused on women is needed to determine which techniques work, for which conditions, and at which life stages. From a longevity perspective, this is an interesting area: brain stimulation could eventually become part of a broader toolkit for supporting quality of life in the second half of life.
