Statins may cut dementia risk in type 2 diabetes

Statins are drugs commonly prescribed to lower cholesterol and protect the heart. But the study, which followed more than 132,000 people with type 2 diabetes over ten years, found that those who started statins within a year of diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of dementia compared to those who did not use statins.

Type 2 diabetes is already known to raise the risk of dementia. One possible explanation involves insulin resistance, a condition in which cells respond poorly to insulin, and chronically elevated blood sugar levels that may damage brain tissue over time. Statins may slow this process not only by lowering cholesterol, but also by reducing chronic low-grade inflammation, a process now thought to play a role in neurodegeneration.

Timing appears to matter

A notable finding is the apparent importance of when treatment begins. People who started statins early after their diabetes diagnosis showed greater benefit than those who started later. The researchers are careful to note that this is an association, not proof of causation. Healthier patients may have been more likely to receive early prescriptions, which could partly explain the difference in risk.

What this means in practice

From a longevity perspective, the findings raise an intriguing question: could medications prescribed primarily for heart health also protect the aging brain? The Danish cohort is large enough to take seriously, but the finding calls for randomised trials before statins can be recommended specifically for dementia prevention. People with type 2 diabetes should discuss this with their doctor, and should not read these results as proof that statins prevent dementia.
